President Arias of Costa Rica has written a powerful Op-Ed in the Washington Post today, endorsing the main recommendations of the Make Roads Safe campaign.
President Arias, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on conflict resolution in Central America, describes ‘violence on our roads’ as his new struggle. He announces that he has signed a Presidential Decree committing Costa Rica to providing at least 10% of its road infrastructure budgets for road safety, a key aim of the Make Roads Safe campaign, and urges development banks to do likewise. President Arias also confirms his support for a $300 million Action Plan for global road safety, another key demand of the campaign.
Oscar Arias’ article comes as government representatives and road safety campaigners from across Latin America prepare to meet in Costa Rica’s capital, San Jose, to agree a Declaration of San Jose calling for action to implement road safety across the region.
