UNEP Backs "10% Rule" Road Safety CallThe United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is supporting the Make Roads Safe campaign’s call for a 10% road safety allocation in all road building and upgrading projects funded by aid donors. Achim Steiner, Executive Director of UNEP, said: “The recommendation of the Commission for Global Road Safety in its Make Roads Safe report – for 10 per cent of all road infrastructure projects supported by bilateral and multilateral donors to be committed to road safety (“the 10 per cent rule”) – is a good step in promoting sustainable mobility worldwide. UNEP also promotes ways to bring requirements for pedestrian walkways and bicycle lanes in developing country cities to the consideration of multilateral donors such as the World Bank and the regional development banks”. “We therefore fully support this global initiative and would like to contribute to the environmental justification for the campaign, making it even more compelling, and increasing the likelihood that future transport infrastructure financing agreements will include such clauses”. |
