Before the game Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva highlighted the need to take action around the world and encouraged football fans to support the campaign. “Too many young people are injured and killed on the roads. The world needs to wake up to this problem and we need to tell the United Nations to make our roads safe. I’m proud that Arsenal fans have been signing the petition.” Arsenal fan Paul Collins signed the petition and said: “A child dies on the road every 3 minutes, which, in my opinion, is a shocking statistic. But we don't want people to just be statistics. We want these often very young kids to have long and fruitful lives. It is up to the policy makers to introduce the methods and put structures in place to make roads safe.” The club follows FC Barcelona in backing the campaign. Other international footballers signing the petition include Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o, Lilian Thuram of France and Croatia midfielder Niko Kranjčar. |
