Petitions have been collected, mostly by hand, in more than forty countries around the world since June 2006. The petition drive has been led by automobile clubs and road safety organisations. Some of the biggest contributors were Costa Rica (212,000), Italy (116,000), India (98,000) and Japan (90,000). The last vital 100,000 names have come from countries including Lebanon, Ghana, Kenya, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and South Africa.

Over the past 18 months people have signed petitions at churches, mosques, schools, football grounds, conferences, motor shows, fairs and shopping centres. We kicked off the petition signing at the British Grand Prix in June 2006 and since then have also collected nearly 100,000 signatures at grand prix and other motor sport events around the world. We’ve had support along the way from many public figures from sport, music and politics, generating an unprecedented profile and awareness for global road safety. See our flickr photos for a snapshot of some of the many events that have taken place around the world.

We would like to thank everyone who has signed the petition and added your support to the campaign for global road safety.

But don’t stop there…if we succeed in getting the UN to approve a Ministerial conference next week it will only be the first step. We will need to keep organising to make sure that promises are kept and action is taken.
