F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has added his support to the call for a Decade of Action for Road Safety, urging people to ‘get behind the cause’.

Hamilton, who first gave his support to the Make Roads Safe campaign by signing our petition to the UN in 2007, added his name to the latest phase of the campaign during a break in his final preparations for the new racing season.

Lewis Hamilton said: “It is terribly sad that road crashes are the biggest killer of young people around the world. We need governments and motoring bodies to come together and agree a Decade of Action for Road Safety to begin working together to reduce these deaths and injuries. I urge people to get behind this cause and join me in supporting the Make Roads Safe campaign’.

Lewis Hamilton is the latest celebrity to add his name to the campaign. Others who have recently joined our global ambassador Michelle Yeoh in calling for a Decade of Action include former US president Bill Clinton, Oscar winning film directors Ang Lee and Oliver Stone, Chinese movie star Jet Li, Michael Schumacher and broadcaster Michael Palin.

And Lewis Hamilton will soon be joined in the campaign by one of his closest competitors on the race track, Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, who will launch the Commission for Global Road Safety’s new Make Roads Safe report at a major event in Rome in early May.
