Kenya’s Vice President has signed the Make Roads Safe petition as a grassroots campaign takes to the streets of Nairobi.

David Njoroge, a member of the Commission for Global Road Safety, secured the support of Vice President Arthur Moody Awori the Kenyan government for the proposed UN Conference following high level discussions. Mr Njoroge, who shared a platform with Desmond Tutu at the Make Roads Safe Africa launch event in Cape Town in June 2007, will also be lobbying the G8 Infrastructure Consortium for Africa at its annual meeting in Tunis in December.

Meanwhile road safety NGO Chariots of Destiny has taken the campaign on to Nairobi’s streets with petition stands at shopping centres and on university campuses. Chariot’s director, Casey Marenge, herself victim of a road crash which left her in a wheelchair, is leading the effort to get public support for action on road safety.
