The EU is one of the biggest donors to Sub Saharan Africa and supports major road infrastructure development projects through the EU/Africa Partnership on Infrastructure, but there is little focus on road safety. David Ward from the Make Roads Safe campaign urged members of the European Parliament and officials of the European Commission to prioritise road safety as part of these investments at a meeting of the Forum for the Automobile and Society. Malcolm Harbour MEP, Chairman of the Forum for the Automobile & Society, and Ari Vatanen MEP signed the Make Roads Safe petition at the meeting. Ivan Hodac, Director of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) also signed the petition on behalf of his organisation.
