Injury Experts at American Public Health Association Endorse Make Roads Safe

The Injury Control and Emergency Health Services Section (ICEHS) of the American Public Health Association has endorsed the Make Roads Safe campaign.

The American Public Health Association is the oldest and largest organization of public health professionals in the world, representing more than 50,000 members from over 50 occupations of public health including leaders in the injury prevention field who are members of the APHA Injury Control and Emergency Health Services Section (ICEHS). ICEHS addresses violent and unintentional injuries and all types of emergency public health to persons of all ages. Its mission is to provide a forum in the United States for professionals in injury prevention, emergency health care services, and disaster preparedness to work towards a comprehensive approach to the control of injuries, including those caused by motor-vehicle related incidents.

Because of the ICEHS’s commitment to injury prevention and because of the disproportionate toll road injuries contribute to injuries worldwide, the leadership of the ICEHS has voted to become a supporter of Make Roads Safe. In addition, members of ICEHS are encouraging their home institutions to join the campaign as well. John Lundell, MA, who is the Deputy Director for the University of Iowa Injury Prevention Research Center and the ICEHS Newsletter Editor, stated, “Through our relationships in Central Europe and elsewhere it is clear that crashes remain the leading cause of traumatic injuries and deaths around the world. Our Center joins the ICEHS to support the efforts of the Make Roads Safe campaign to reduce the huge global health toll resulting from motor vehicle crashes."

The move comes after Make Roads Safe’s North America Director, Bella Dinh-Zarr, participated in the American Public Health Association’s Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. The Annual Meeting hosts 13,000 public professionals.
