U.S. Governors Highway Safety Association Supports Make Roads SafeAt a recent high-level board meeting in Washington, D.C., the US Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) voted to endorse the Make Roads Safe campaign.
Barbara Harsha, GHSA Executive Director
GHSA, widely respected as “the States’ Voice on Highway Safety” in the U.S., is a nonprofit association representing the highway safety offices of U.S. States, Territories, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Indian Nation. GHSA provides leadership and representation for the states and territories to improve traffic safety and influence national policy. GHSA members, the Governors Highway Safety Representatives are leaders in their states and are appointed by Governors to administer federal and state highway safety funds and implement state highway safety plans. Barbara Harsha, GHSA Executive Director, commented, “Highway safety is increasingly an international issue. The United States can learn from our colleagues in other developed countries who have been successful in affecting the behavior of high risk drivers and addressing major highway safety issues such as impaired driving, failure to use occupant protection devices and speeding. The U.S, in turn, can share our skills, knowledge and experience with developing countries that are just beginning to wrestle with a wide range of highway safety issues. State highway safety offices can help facilitate this knowledge and information exchange.” As an indication of GHSA’s commitment to the issue, the GHSA’s Annual Meeting in 2007 will focus on international road safety.
