Safe Kids Worldwide Back Make Roads Safe CampaignSafe Kids Worldwide, which confirmed its support for the Make Roads Safe campaign at its recent Leadership Council, is a united organization with hundreds of thousands of volunteers who make up 761 coalitions, chapters, and network partners in 16 countries — all with a universal vision: to eliminate accidental childhood injury. Automotive safety is a major part of Safe Kids Worldwide’s work. “Pedestrian injuries and motor vehicle crashes are already leading killers of children in many parts of the world, and will become even greater dangers as developing countries put a growing number of vehicles on an expanding network of roads,” said Martin R. Eichelberger, M.D., Chairman, Safe Kids Worldwide. “Working closely with communities through local coalitions on six continents, Safe Kids Worldwide is committed to help Make Roads Safe.” US Make Roads Safe campaigners recently spread the word about the campaign at the 2006 Leadership Conference of Safe Kids Worldwide on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. The conference, entitled “Perspectives on Child Safety,” included participants from around the world. Speakers at the conference included Christine Branche, Ph.D, Director of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control Centers for Disease Control, Division of Unintentional Injuries who spoke about “A Global Perspective of Unintentional Injuries,” and the Administrator of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Nicole Nason, who spoke to the subject of “Influencing Individual Behavior Change”. Safe Kids began 19 years ago with 25 local coalitions in the United States. That number has since grown to 316 coalitions and 300 chapters in the United States alone. In addition, there are many international affiliates in countries such as Brazil, South Africa and Vietnam. Since the founding of the organization, the injury death rate is down 45 percent — or 38,000 young lives saved. For more information on Safe Kids Worldwide please visit www.safekids.org. |
