The Make Roads Safe campaign has been highlighted at the Road Safety Congress of the Americas held in Puerto Rico. Dr. Bella Dinh-Zarr, the Make Roads Safe North America Director, gave a plenary session address about the campaign’s progress in the region and the upcoming United Nations General Assembly resolution and debate on road safety in March. Attended by representatives from 23 countries in North America, Latin America, and the Caribbean, the bilingual Congress was a forum for best practices on technical topics such as occupant protection, data systems, commercial vehicle safety, alcohol-impaired driving, effective road safety agency management, and law enforcement. Hosted by the Puerto Rico Traffic Safety Commission, the diverse Congress attendees included high-level government officials, auto club executives, researchers, safety advocates, youth, membership organization leaders, and others. Attendees exchanged information and built the foundation for future collaboration in the region over the 2-day conference. Jose Delgado, Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Traffic Safety Commission, commented “We are very pleased that Puerto Rico can be a place where honored guests from this region of the world can come together to work on the challenge of saving lives and preventing injuries on the roads.” The Congress was immediately followed by the Second Latin American and Caribbean Stakeholders Forum, which focused on organizing the region to address road safety as a follow up to the First Forum held in Costa Rica in 2006. South and Central American governments recently agreed to hold a regional Ministerial conference on road safety during 2008. For more information see: www.csva2007.com |
