The Make Roads Safe campaign has briefed several key government officials in Washington, DC as momentum builds towards a UN vote on road safety.

The FIA Foundation’s Director General David Ward gave a presentation at the U.S. State Department to the Interagency Working Group on Road Safety comprised of members of U.S. government agencies involved in road safety. David Ward spoke about the campaign’s progress around the world and the upcoming United Nations General Assembly resolution and debate on road safety in March of this year.

Accompanied by Make Roads Safe North American Director Dr. Bella Dinh-Zarr, Ward also met with Richard Capka, Administrator at the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to discuss the importance of U.S. support of the UN Ministerial-level meeting proposed by the UN resolution. In a meeting with high-level officials at the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ward and Dinh-Zarr commended NHTSA for its strong role in supporting global road safety. NHTSA participates in the World Forum for Vehicle Standards at the UN in Geneva and plays a leading role in the UNECE Working Party for Road Traffic Safety, the OECD, and the International Transport Forum. NHTSA recently was awarded the Prince Michael Award for Road Safety, for increasing seat belt use in the US and for its international leadership in promoting electronic stability control (ESC) in all new cars by 2011.
