UK Minister Admits 'Insufficient Focus' on Global Road Safety

A UK Cabinet Minister has admitted that the UK government has not been giving adequate attention to global road traffic injuries.

Answering questions yesterday on the UK Department for International Development’s new White Paper, ‘Eliminating World Poverty’, the Leader of the House of Lords, Baroness Amos, responded to a question from Labour peer Lord Harrison on the appalling impact of road traffic deaths and injuries in developing countries by saying, “It is not an area that we focus on sufficiently. There are high levels of road traffic accidents and death. In some countries, the numbers are as high as those dying from HIV/AIDS”.

The admission from Baroness Amos, who was International Development Secretary in 2003, comes as more than 90 UK MPs, from across the main political parties, have signed a House of Commons petition supporting the Make Roads Safe campaign’s call for greater political attention and development funding for global road safety.
